Welcome to the preview of I Fell in Love with a Robot, an experimental short film that blends historical reality with speculative fantasy.

Every story has a heartbeat rooted in truth. The foundation of this project belongs to my mother, a young woman who graduated from the Philadelphia School of Design in the 1930s with dreams of becoming a fashion designer. Like many creative women of her generation, her ambitions collided with the realities of the Great Depression and World War II. Instead of haute couture, she navigated the bustling retail world of New York and the marketing departments of legendary Philadelphia department stores like Wanamaker’s and Gimbels, rendering shoes and handbags in pen and gouache to sustain her family.

She was talented, resilient, and like Rose—the protagonist of our film—deeply naive about the harsh realities of a world at war.

But where my mother’s history settled into the enduring reality of post-war American life, Rose’s story veers into the fantastical. Haunted by the loss of her boyfriend to World War II, Rose encounters an anomaly in a 1944 New York subway station: a machine capable of devotion, a robot that commits itself to her, and eventually, to protecting her young son on a future battlefield.

What you are about to experience is an interactive experiment in storytelling. Below, you will find the film divided into segments. You can watch them sequentially or skip around as you please. Beneath each video, I have provided detailed copy explaining the intricacies of the plotting, character motivations, and structural planning. Because this is a work in progress, your feedback is invaluable as we refine these elements ahead of final production.

Step into the crossroads of memory and machine. Enjoy the show!
